New frontiers from removal to recycling of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater in the Circular Economy
2020
[EN] Nutrient recovery technologies are rapidly expanding due to the need for the appropriate recycling of key elements from waste resources in order to move towards a truly sustainable modern society based on the Circular Economy. Nutrient recycling is a promising strategy for reducing the depletion of non-renewable resources and the environmental impact linked to their extraction and manufacture. However, nutrient recovery technologies are not yet fully mature, as further research is needed to optimize process efficiency and enhance their commercial applicability. This paper reviews state-of-the-art of nutrient recovery, focusing on frontier technological advances and economic and environ…
Cost and safety issues of emerging technologies against conventional techniques
2015
Abstract The industrialization of recovery processes is governed by several factors such as scale-up boundaries, product safety, and overall cost. Thereby, improved process efficiency is considered in terms of cost minimization via reducing processing steps and restricting overall energy consumption. The emerging nonthermal technologies promise to overcome the obstacles of conventional techniques with regard to energy requirements, but in some cases this has not yet been achievable. In this chapter, an attempt to clarify cost issues of conventional and emerging technologies is conducted. Moreover, other aspects such as safety issues are discussed, as the facilitation of healthy food additiv…
Assisting immersive virtual reality development with user experience design approach
2017
In our study we explored how to design a biography of a late Finnish artist as a VR experience. We conducted a development process assisted by user experience (UX) design methods, which increased the process efficiency, and resulted in a research prototype. Through previous research and our development process, we identified components affecting the user experience. These components are: Immersion, Presence, Disorientation, Sense of Control, Pleasantness, Exploration and Simulator Sickness. From our user study with 13 participants, we were able to draw implications that relate to these components. While the set of components could be incomplete or subject to change, shows that further resea…
